Hong Kong Visa Runs
Expats living in China have all heard of the infamous visa run to
Hong Kong. Let's say you're having a great time in China and
you don't want the fun to end. Your visa is about to expire
and you have the following options:
1. Return home according to your original
plan.
2. Apply for an one-time extension at the
local Public Security Bureau.
3. Mail your original passport and documents
to us for visa processing.
4. Use a local visa service company.
5. Travel to Hong Kong and apply for a new
visa.
You don't want to return home and your Chinese isn't good enough
to negotiate more than a ten day extension at the PSB. You
could use a local Chinese visa company, but you already know that
they charge insane fees. They're not stupid - they know that
going to Hong Kong is expensive for most people and returning home
is not a desirable option. Chinese visa companies charge just
a fraction below what it would cost to do this on your own in Hong
Kong.
The least expensive option for most expats is to mail passports
and documents to the PandaVisa.com for visa processing. (total
cost: $385 time: 10
days) See International Services
for more information.
But - if you are living in Guangzhou or within a couple of hours
from Hong Kong, you may want to take a ferry there and spend a few
days to get your visa back into the mainland. Keep in mind,
Hong Kong does not offer same day service since April of 2008.
